Temagami Canoe Routes

Temagami is located about a hours drive north of North Bay, Ontario. However, the Temagami area encompasses several Provincial Parks system. Lady Evelyn - Smoothrock Provincial Park and the Obabika River Provincial Park to name two. The land is vast and with many different access points available. This is a sacred land with a rich history, a place where towering old-growth forests and crystal-clear blue lakes allow you to connect with nature.

The Ontario Parks website describes Lady Evelyn - Smoothrock Provincial Park as follows:

Lady Evelyn-Smoothwater is a spectacular wilderness class park encompassing rugged topography, clear lakes, stunning waterfalls, and rushing rivers.

  • Precambrian bedrock rises to a dome forming Ishpatina Ridge, the highest point in Ontario, and other scenic high points like Maple Mountain.

  • As the headwaters for several rivers, Lady Evelyn-Smoothwater connects to four waterway class parks.

  • Protects some of Temagami’s famous old growth White and Red pine ecosystems.

  • Temagami’s backcountry parks provide a remote wilderness experience, protect over 100,000ha, and provide roughly 600km of interconnected canoe routes.

  • Located in the heart of the Temagami region, Lady Evelyn-Smoothwater is connected to a 2400km canoeing network consisting of Parks, Conservation Reserves, and Crown lands.

  • The region’s canoe routes traverse some of the most rugged landscapes in Northern Ontario – 4 of the province’s highest peaks are in Temagami’s backcountry parks.

  • The area’s rich Indigenous heritage dates back at least 10,000 years, and canoeists travel on ancient portages or “nastawgan”.

The "Spirit Forest" in Temagami, Ontario, refers to the extensive old-growth red and white pine forest located at the north end of Obabika Lake, specifically around the area of Chee-Skon Lake and the nearby Spirit Rock. It's not just a collection of trees; it's a significant cultural and spiritual site for the Teme-Augama Anishnabai people, according to Northern Ontario Travel and Wikipedia

Key aspects of the Spirit Forest:

  • Old-growth forest:

    It's composed of mature trees, many of which are red and white pines, that have been growing for centuries. 

  • Wakimika Triangle:

    The area is home to the Wakimika Triangle, one of the world's largest old-growth red and white pine forests. 

  • Spiritual Significance:

    The Teme-Augama Anishnabai people hold Spirit Rock, a large rock formation on the shore of Chee-Skon Lake, as a sacred site. They also have a deep connection to the ancient trees in the forest. 

  • Hiking trails:

    The area features trails that allow visitors to explore the forest and its many old-growth pines. 

  • Cultural Heritage:

    The forest is a vital link to Temagami's past, offering a living classroom for environmental education and a reminder of the importance of preserving ancient natural spaces.
